Zentangle is a relaxing step-by-step drawing technique. In this class you will learn the basic steps, principles and history of the Zentangle drawing method. During the 1930s, after being rebuffed by art critics and then teaching himself ancient painting techniques, Dutch painter Han Van Meegeren forged versions of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age. His buyers were museums and notable collectors. After WWII these "new" masterpieces came to light, and he became the subject of a notorious trial. This course will show you how to look at a picture of a stock chart to show buy and sell signals. No knowledge or understanding of the stock market is required. The emphasis is on paper trading, but you will also learn how to trade from home with an online broker. All that is required is an internet connection (no software is required). Pack a lunch and join Ted for a hike! Explore the beautiful forests of the Comox Valley and beyond. Our hikes will take us from Bowser to Campbell River. We will carpool when practical. These hikes have variable terrain and are not suitable foe those with mobility issues. Our six- to nine-kilometre hikes often go over three hours. Wear good hiking footwear and dress for the weather. These hikes from Campbell River to Qualicum Beach are moderate to challenging, with some elevation changes and uneven, root-bound trails. Good footwear and poles are recommended. Mobility/health-challenged individuals will find these hikes too difficult. A signed accident/injury waiver is required. Hiking/travel times vary (weather dependent), 3 - 4+ hours, 5 - 7+ kms. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 124,000 Canadians were diagnosed with dementia in 2020. That's a staggering number. There are many causes and types of dementia, including vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. While there is no cure, there are factors that can be addressed to reduce your risk. This course will focus on local geology for the layperson. We will discuss how plate tectonics and accreted terranes shaped the construction of B.C. and Vancouver Island, as well as age-dating rocks, the rock cycle and rock units on the island, the fossil record (paleontology) and mass extinctions, earthquake and tsunami risks, formation of ore deposits, glaciation, and facts and myths of groundwater. If time allows, related topics such as diamond deposits will be included.

The third in a series of seminars dealing with ideas that have reverberated through informed discourse down the ages. The concept of the four elements (earth, water, air and fire) was extended by Aristotle to include a fifth: aether. The ancient aether survives in modern physics as a form of dark energy called quintessence, a speculative fifth force. Aether evolved over two millennia, yet its essence survives today. Why? The Marine Basic First Aid course meets defined Federal Transport Canada Marine Safety Training Standards for Marine First Aid. This course provides individuals with a basic training level of First Aid and CPR required by the Marine Industry. Certification is by the Canadian Red Cross with a certification period of three years.

Prerequisite(s): Must be 16 years+ to take training. Some previous knowledge of First Aid/ CPR is recommended, but not required.

Through this course you will receive thorough training that meets or exceeds all WorkSafeBC and CSA regulations and standards. Each student will be evaluated and those able to demonstrate a minimum level of operational competence receive an Ives & Associates document of successful completion. Please note: Unique conditions specific to the equipment and/or working environment encountered by operators may require that employers provide additional training and evaluation where appropriate. Please bring your CSA approved steel toe boots. Dress for the weather and bring a lunch/snacks.

This course is best suited for those who have some experience in the jewellery studio or have taken a beginner's level course. In this fast-paced workshop we will be creating two sterling silver rings with tube set stones. We will explore two different setting techniques and will brush up our skills surrounding sawing, soldering, polishing and stone setting. Samples will be available to view prior to class starting.

This 2-day course is an introduction to the creative and fun world of jewellery making for beginners. It has been specifically designed for students with no previous metal working experience. You will learn all the techniques needed to create your own beautifully finished band ring and one-of-a-kind pendant. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice you will learn various basic techniques such as piercing, filing, soldering, annealing, sanding, polishing, texturing and fabrication. A focus will be on safe studio and equipment practices. We will demonstrate all the steps needed to complete each piece as well as provide handouts with all the details for your reference. By the end of this course you will be able to take home two new pieces of jewellery you will be proud to wear or share. Note: The cost of materials for the two projects are included in the tuition. Please check the supply list online for additional items you need to bring from home. There will be a few templates for designs for those who don't want to design their own. In this fast-paced and exciting workshop, a continuation of Silver Jewellery Express I, you will be creating two more sterling silver projects. Learn new techniques such as advanced fabrication and soldering, creating a cabochon setting for a ring and setting the stone with accuracy. We will be adding texture by introducing surface ornamentation techniques using our studio stamps and hammers, fusing with metal, and coloring with patinas. Advance your skills and reignite your creative process in a creative group atmosphere. Note: Materials are provided and included in the price. Students will learn how to carve a ring out of carving wax, size a wax ring, invest the ring and cast and finish the ring. This course is open to any student, beginner or an advanced student who wants the opportunity to cast in a professional setting. Note: All equipment and materials are provided and included in the price. We will be having a short lunch break mid way through the day, so bring a bagged lunch. It is recommended to bring an apron. *Mandatory: Students must bring their own N95 mask and safety glasses.

This course prepares trade-qualified mechanics for their Authorized Inspector (AI) certification. AIs help maintain road safety and ensure compliant and safe vehicles are operating on BC roadways. Upon completion, you will be able to perform inspections on private and commercial vehicles according to specifications and responsibilities described in the Vehicle Inspection Manual and the Motor Vehicle Act & Regulations. A minimum pass mark of 80 per cent is required in the AI exam at the end of the course. NIC will forward the Certification forms and examinations to the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch (CVSE) and once all eligibility requirements have been deemed as met, a Certificate of Qualification will be emailed to you.

Prerequisite(s): Participants must hold a B.C. Trade Qualification or an Inter-provincial Red-Seal Certificate in at least one of the following: Automotive Service Technician, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic, Commercial Trailer Mechanic, or Motorcycle Mechanic. Apprentices in Level 4 are NOT eligible to register.

Gain the knowledge and skills required to operate small, non-pleasure vessels operating within 25 miles from shore (formerly MED A3). Topics include maritime hazards and emergencies, emergency response, firefighting, lifesaving equipment, abandonment, personal survival, signaling devices and rescue response. The goal of the course is to assist you in responding to marine emergencies in the coastal area. Prerequisite(s): none

Gain the knowledge and skills required to operate small commercial vessels, other than tugs and fishing vessels, up to five gross tonnage engaged on a near coastal, class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage, and for fishing vessels up to 15 gross tonnage or 12 meters overall length engaged on a near coastal, class 2 (including an inland voyage on Lake Superior or Lake Huron) or a sheltered waters voyage. The Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate is required to operate marine passenger vessels, work boats such as water taxis, crew boats, charter boats, sport-fishing boats and whale-watching boats, that carry less than 12 passengers, Near Coastal 2 or Sheltered waters and are 5 gross tons or less. Prerequisite(s): Students can take this course if they are 16 or older; However, to be the Licenced Master or Skipper, they need to be a minimum of 18 years of age, hold a Restricted Operator Certificate - Marine (ROC-M), and have a Small Non-Pleasure Domestic Vessel Basic Safety Certificate (SDV-BS - formerly MED A3). One crew member on board the small commercial vessel is required to hold a valid Marine Basic or Marine Advanced First Aid certificate.

This seven-hour course is required for personnel operating a VHF radio on marine vessels using Digital Select Calling (DCS) VHF radios withing 25 miles of shore. It will prepare you for the Department of Communications examination for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) (ROC-M). The exam is administered on-site at the end of the day and a temporary certificate will be issued for successful students. A permanent certificate will be issued in the mail. Prerequisite(s): None

Mariners serving on compulsorily fitted commercial ships (Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems or GMDSS) within the North American A1 sea areas (approximately 50 miles from shore on the BC coast) require this 3-day course for compliance with the International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended in 1995 (STCW 95 Regulation IV/2). This includes mariners working on Passenger, Cargo, Towing and Fishing Vessels.

This course is for OFA 010 or OFA 020 certified first aid attendants that work in environments requiring Transportation Endorsement in addition to their Occupational First Aid Level 1 or 2, according to WSBC Regulations Part 3 Guidelines (3.14 to 3.21). Students will be required to complete an NIC Waiver form at the first class. Certificate is by WSBC and is valid for three years.

Prerequisite(s): Students must be at least 16 years of age. Students under 19 require a parent/ guardian signed waiver. Picture identification and current OFA Level 1 or 2 Certificate must be brought to class.

Obtain the necessary certification to work in the food service industry. This course covers important food safety and worker safety information including food borne illness, recieving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing. Certificates will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
