The EMR course provides the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness in a pre-hospital setting and includes CPR level HCP and AED. The certification is valid for three years. Being a certified EMR opens the doors to a variety of employment opportunities including BC Ambulance Services, private ambulance services (ie LifeSupport Transport), fire departments, law enforcement, ski-patrol and rescue, and industry employers in remote locations in BC / Alberta.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), "ageism refers to the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age." Ageism is a common and socially accepted and tolerated form of discrimination in Canada. It can occur regardless of how old we are and may lead to others making negative judgments about our background, capability, mental or physical status. We will explore various examples of ageism and how to counter these beliefs in ourselves and others.

These hikes from Campbell River to Qualicum Beach are moderate to challenging, with some elevation changes and uneven, root-bound trails. Good footwear and poles are recommended. Mobility/health-challenged individuals will find these hikes too difficult. A signed accident/injury waiver is required. Hiking/travel times vary (weather dependent), 3 - 4+ hours, 5 - 7+ kms. The Marine Basic First Aid course meets defined Federal Transport Canada Marine Safety Training Standards for Marine First Aid. This course provides individuals with a basic training level of First Aid and CPR required by the Marine Industry. Certification is by the Canadian Red Cross with a certification period of three years.

Prerequisite(s): Must be 16 years+ to take training. Some previous knowledge of First Aid/ CPR is recommended, but not required.

The Marine Advanced course will cover the Red Cross; first aid kit; body structure and function; toxicological hazards; examination of person or patient (oxygen administration); spinal Injuries; burns, scalds and effects of cold and heat; fractures, dislocations and muscular injuries; medical care of rescued persons; radio medical advice; pharmacology; sterilization and cardiac arrest, drowning and asphyxia. Certification is by Canadian Red Cross and is valid for three years.

Prerequisite(s): Minimum of 16 years of age. Some previous  knowledge of First Aid/ CPR is recommended, but  not required.

Through this course you will receive thorough training that meets or exceeds all WorkSafeBC and CSA regulations and standards. Each student will be evaluated and those able to demonstrate a minimum level of operational competence receive an Ives & Associates document of successful completion. Please note: Unique conditions specific to the equipment and/or working environment encountered by operators may require that employers provide additional training and evaluation where appropriate. Join us in the newly renovated NIC Metal Jewellery Studio and reignite your passion for the vacuum casting process. This class will be a special open studio casting weekend. The students have artistic freedom to create a wax model of their choosing. Each piece will be unique, and the students will also learn basic fabrication and how to add embellishments. This 2-day class combines two techniques, casting methods, and fabrication skills. At the end of class each student will have a one-of-a-kind piece they will be proud to wear. Metals will be provided and extra material can be purchased from the instructor if needed.

This is the perfect course to attend on your own or in a group. In this one day course you will learn how to make three beautiful pairs of earrings using different texturing and shaping methods.

This course prepares trade-qualified mechanics for their Authorized Inspector (AI) certification. AI's help maintain road safety and ensure compliant and safe vehicles are operating on BC roadways. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to perform inspections on private and commercial vehicles according to specifications and responsibilities described in the Vehicle Inspection Manual and the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations. A minimum pass mark of 80 per cent is required in the AI exam at the end of the course. NIC will forward the Certification forms and examinations to the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch (CVSE) and once all eligibility requirements have been met, a Certificate of Qualification will be emailed to participants. Authorized Inspectors are required to renew every 2 years.The inspector renewal is done online on the Vehicle Inspection program with their personal BCeID user id and password. The renewal fee is paid either online or by calling CVSE with credit card information. CVSE policy states that a renewal be completed within 5 years of expiry. Failure to renew within 5 years would require the AI to retake the course.

Prerequisite(s): Participants must hold a B.C. Trade Qualification or an Inter-provincial Red-Seal Certificate in at least one of the following: Automotive Service Technician, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic, Commercial Trailer Mechanic, or Motorcycle Mechanic. Apprentices in Level 4 are NOT eligible to register.

Gain the knowledge and skills required to operate small, non-pleasure vessels operating within 25 miles from shore (formerly MED A3). Topics include maritime hazards and emergencies, emergency response, firefighting, lifesaving equipment, abandonment, personal survival, signaling devices and rescue response. The goal of the course is to assist you in responding to marine emergencies in the coastal area. Prerequisite(s): none

Gain the knowledge and skills required to operate small commercial vessels, other than tugs and fishing vessels, up to five gross tonnage engaged on a near coastal, class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage, and for fishing vessels up to 15 gross tonnage or 12 meters overall length engaged on a near coastal, class 2 (including an inland voyage on Lake Superior or Lake Huron) or a sheltered waters voyage. The Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate is required to operate marine passenger vessels, work boats such as water taxis, crew boats, charter boats, sport-fishing boats and whale-watching boats, that carry less than 12 passengers, Near Coastal 2 or Sheltered waters and are 5 gross tons or less. Prerequisite(s): Students can take this course if they are 16 or older; However, to be the Licenced Master or Skipper, they need to be a minimum of 18 years of age, hold a Restricted Operator Certificate - Marine (ROC-M), and have a Small Non-Pleasure Domestic Vessel Basic Safety Certificate (SDV-BS - formerly MED A3). One crew member on board the small commercial vessel is required to hold a valid Marine Basic or Marine Advanced First Aid certificate.

In addition to topics covered by the Basic Safety (SDV-BS) course, this Transport Canada approved marine emergency duties course (formerly MED A1/A2) enables you to learn safety-related skills associated with domestic vessels such as crew boats, passenger ships and fishing boats operating in Canadian Waters. These skills include assisting passengers to survive an emergency, maintenance of safety equipment, and safety record keeping. Note: The Domestic Vessel Safety course includes practical training such extinguishing fires and safety exercises in a pool where students will use life jackets and Immersion suits. Standard gear is provided; however, if a student determines the gear provided is unsuitable for their needs, it is requested that they bring their own. All students should bring a towel and bathing suit for pool exercises. Prerequisite(s): Must be 15 years or older.

This seven-hour course is required for personnel operating a VHF radio on marine vessels using Digital Select Calling (DCS) VHF radios withing 25 miles of shore. It will prepare you for the Department of Communications examination for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) (ROC-M). The exam is administered on-site at the end of the day and a temporary certificate will be issued for successful students. A permanent certificate will be issued in the mail. Prerequisite(s): None

This marine training course is designed to provide the student with practical knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch while using Radar, Loran-C, GPS, Echo Sounder, a compass, and an Electronic Charting System. Each course participant must attend a minimum of 90% of lecture classes and 100% attendance is required during simulation exercises and evaluation. Participants must have prior training in topics such as basic Chart Work and Navigation Safety to have the background knowledge required for the navigation of a vessel under simulated conditions.

Students will learn to plan and conduct safe navigation, understand and make use of various navigation-related publications, determine a ship's position and keep required records. This comprehensive 12 day course prepares mariners for writing the Transport Canada exam, Chartwork & Pilotage 1 (CP1), on the final day of the course.

Students will learn how to plan safe navigation using collision regulations, watchkeeping standards, vessel lights and signals, distress signals, fog and maneuvering signals and watchkeeping at night and in restricted visibility. This comprehensive 7-day course prepares mariners for writing the Transport Canada exam, Navigation & Safety 1 (NS1-STCW or NS1 Domestic - NSD), on the final day of the course. Mariners serving on compulsorily fitted commercial ships (Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems or GMDSS) within the North American A1 sea areas (approximately 50 miles from shore on the BC coast) require this 3-day course for compliance with the International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended in 1995 (STCW 95 Regulation IV/2). This includes mariners working on Passenger, Cargo, Towing and Fishing Vessels.
