Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder - EMR

AET-020

The EMR course provides the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness in a pre-hospital setting and includes CPR level HCP and AED. The certification is valid for three years. Being a certified EMR opens the doors to a variety of employment opportunities including BC Ambulance Services, private ambulance services (ie LifeSupport Transport), fire departments, law enforcement, ski-patrol and rescue, and industry employers in remote locations in BC / Alberta.

Prerequisite(s): Participants must be certified in Standard First Aid with CPR level C or higher. Pre-reading and homework required, contact First Aid Dept at 250-334-5092 to arrange to get course materials. Minimum of 16 years of age. Students under 19 require a parent / guardian signed waiver.

Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Training Course (SVOP)

Gain the knowledge and skills required to operate small commercial vessels, other than tugs and fishing vessels, up to five gross tonnage engaged on a near coastal, class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage, and for fishing vessels up to 15 gross tonnage or 12 meters overall length engaged on a near coastal, class 2 (including an inland voyage on Lake Superior or Lake Huron) or a sheltered waters voyage. The Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate is required to operate marine passenger vessels, work boats such as water taxis, crew boats, charter boats, sport-fishing boats and whale-watching boats, that carry less than 12 passengers, Near Coastal 2 or Sheltered waters and are 5 gross tons or less. Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS)

In addition to topics covered by the Basic Safety (SDV-BS) course, this Transport Canada approved marine emergency duties course (formerly MED A1/A2) enables you to learn safety-related skills associated with domestic vessels such as crew boats, passenger ships and fishing boats operating in Canadian Waters. These skills include assisting passengers to survive an emergency, maintenance of safety equipment, and safety record keeping. Note: The Domestic Vessel Safety course includes practical training such extinguishing fires and safety exercises in a pool where students will use life jackets and Immersion suits. Standard gear is provided; however, if a student determines the gear provided is unsuitable for their needs, it is requested that they bring their own. Restricted Operator Certificate- Maritime (ROC-M)

This seven-hour course is required for personnel operating a VHF radio on marine vessels using Digital Select Calling (DCS) VHF radios withing 25 miles of shore. It will prepare you for the Department of Communications examination for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) (ROC-M). Simulated Electronic Navigation, Limited (SEN-L)

This marine training course is designed to provide the student with practical knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch while using Radar, Loran-C, GPS, Echo Sounder, a compass, and an Electronic Charting System. Each course participant must attend a minimum of 90% of lecture classes and 100% attendance is required during simulation exercises and evaluation. Participants must have prior training in topics such as basic Chart Work and Navigation Safety to have the background knowledge required for the navigation of a vessel under simulated conditions.

Restricted Operator Certificate- Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC)

Mariners serving on compulsorily fitted commercial ships (Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems or GMDSS) within the North American A1 sea areas (approximately 50 miles from shore on the BC coast) require this 3-day course for compliance with the International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended in 1995 (STCW 95 Regulation IV/2). This includes mariners working on Passenger, Cargo, Towing and Fishing Vessels.

WSBC Basic First Aid

This is a WorkSafeBC course that includes an introduction to CPR, choking and hemorrhage control and minor wound care according to WSBC Regulations, Part 3 Guidelines (3.14 - 3.21). The course is excellent for forestry and other industrial applications and required by many employers. Certification is by WSBC and is valid for three years.

Occupational First Aid Transportation Endorsement

This course is for OFA 010 or OFA 020 certified first aid attendants that work in environments requiring Transportation Endorsement in addition to their Occupational First Aid Level 1 or 2, according to WSBC Regulations Part 3 Guidelines (3.14 to 3.21). Students will be required to complete an NIC Waiver form at the first class. Certificate is by WSBC and is valid for three years.
